I have a tip for all of you would-be literati; don't all create flat-out copies of the Latin script. True alphabets, containing letters for vowels and consonants, are actually fairly uncommon in the world (almost all of them developed out of Greek) and were developed much later than other systems.

If every culture in the game has a standard alphabet with 25-ish letters representing the standards sounds of English, wouldn't that be awfully boring?

i agree... i would like a pictogram system, but not one so fucking complicated that my people have to devote too much energy on learning to write... i want to be economic!

Just blank slate using an established fictional or real alphabet (not designing one yourself) is almost on par with having a hero named "Conan the barbarian" or "Vilhelm Tell". I do not condone such a behaviour.
